Amalie groeide op yn [[Fryslân]] en prate ûnder oare [[Frysk]]. Nei har houlik ferhuze hja nei Durlach.
Because of her many tantrums there was a rumor at the court of Durlach, that she was mentally ill. During her pregnancies, she tyrannized her servants.
As further evidence of her alleged mental illness it was alleged that she shed no tears at the sight of her dead husband († March 26, 1732).

Her father-in-law, [[Charles III William, Margrave of Baden-Durlach]], did not want her to influence the new crown prince Charles Frederick.
Mother and son continued to live in Karlsburg castle in Durlach. However, Anna Charlotte lived in a separate apartment in the Karlsburg castle the rest of her life,
shielded from the outside world. The education of her two sons, Karl and Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig was taken over by her mother-in-law Magdalena Wilhelmine of Württemberg.
