'''Washington Irving''' ([[3 april]] [[1783]] - Tarrytown [[New York (steat)|New York]], [[28 novembernovimber]] [[1859]]) was een [[Amerikaanse literatuur|Amerikaans auteur]] van de vroege 19e eeuw. Zijn vader William Irving was afkomstig van de [[Orkney-eilandeneilannen]] en zijn moeder Sarah geboren Sanders was afkomstig uit Nederland.
 
Irving is misschienfaaks het bekendst door zijn korte verhalen over ''[[The Legend of Sleepy Hollow]]'' en ''[[Rip van Winkle]]'' die allebei uit het boek ''[[The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon]]'' komen. Hij schreef en sprak vloeiend Spaans en schreef biografieën over de SpaanseSpaanske geschiedenisskiednis zoals [[Christoffel Columbus]], De morenmoaren en Granada. VerderFierder sprak hij vloeiend Duits en Nederlands.
 
Vanaf 1830 verkende Irving het Westen van Amerika en schreef daar verhalen over, keerde daarna weer terug naar zijn geboortestreek om verhalen te schrijven, en werd daarna AmerikaansAmerikaansk ambassadeur in [[Spanje]] vanfan 1842 totoant 1846. He made his literary debut in 1802 with a series of observational letters to the ''Morning Chronicle'', written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. After moving to England for the family business in 1815, he achieved international fame with the publication of ''The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.'' in 1819. He continued to publish regularly—and almost always successfully—throughout his life, and completed a fiifdielige biografy fan George Washington.
