MAGGIORE, ranks third amongthe great Ciiurches of Rome, and isone of those which have a Porta Santa.lt_ was founded near the MacdlumLiviae, on the Cispiau tongue ofthe Esquiline (177 ft.) in a.d. 352, byPope Liberius, and John, a Romanl^atrician, in consequence of a miracu-lous fall of snow on the 5th of August,which covered the precise space occu-pied by their Basilica.
